In Strasbourg, AMFREE developed a wire laser additive manufacturing (WLAM) technology to produce Europe’s largest metal parts (up to 5m). The pilot unit deposits iron-, nickel-based, and hardfacing materials, cutting lead times (e.g., a stainless steel mold in 3 weeks vs. 12 months).
Collaborating with ArianeGroup, three aluminum alloys for rocket parts were tested. Alloy 2319 achieved 400+ MPa, while 5183—though harder to deposit—proved cost-effective. Challenges (deformation, back reflections) led to a multi-wire nozzle, doubling deposit rates and improving control.
This innovation is now embedded in AMFREE One, an industrial, easy-to-use WLAM machine with real-time monitoring, launched last year. The first cell entered production 6 months ago.
The complete AMFREE solution (machine, software, services) targets aerospace, energy, defense, and railways, enabling high-value parts, repairs, and cladding with unmatched scalability.
Clément Knittel and Félix Boisselier
- Félix Boisselier is a co-founder of AMFREE and leads the company’s technical activities. A mechanical engineer by training, he has spent his entire career in metal additive manufacturing, with a strong focus on Laser DED technologies. After several years working with powder-based systems, he contributed to the development of AMFREE’s innovative wire-based process head, which is now at the core of the company’s commercial offering. Passionate about technology and engineering, Félix combines deep technical expertise with a practical approach to industrial innovation.
- Clément Knittel is the Sales Director of AMFREE, a Strasbourg-based startup he joined at its creation in 2023. AMFREE stands out for its innovative technology in the field of metal additive manufacturing using Laser Wire DED, a rapidly expanding sector. With a degree in Materials Engineering, Clément began his career in the steel industry before transitioning to the energy sector. This diverse experience has equipped him with a robust and varied expertise, which he now applies to the development of AMFREE.
